The Uninvited

Image
The 2009 film "The Uninvited" is a psychological horror film, directed by the Guard brothers, Charles Guard and Thomas Guard. It stars Emily Browning, Arielle Kebbel, Elizabeth Banks, and David Strathairn. The story brings forward to the danger of appearance versus reality. Anna, recently released from a mental asylum, convinces herself that her father's girlfriend, the nurse of the family Rachel has killed her invalid mother by burning to death. In fact, she herself unintentionally caused the death of both her mother and sister, Alex. She hallucinates that Alex is beside her and Rachel wants to kill both of them. However, it is a case of psychic disorder. She kills Rachel and cuts the body into pieces by a knife and throws it into a dustbin. The whole picture except the final conclusive scene is deceptive. It represents a postmodern film vouchsafing the idea of unreliable narrator. The entire story is shown through the eyes of Anna, and thus the truth is hidden. It show...

Teen Patti

Image
The 2010 film "Teen Patti" starring Amitabh Bachchan, R. Madhavan, Shraddha Kapoor, Ben Kingsley, Dhruv Ganesh, Sidhdharth Kher, Vaibhav Talwar, and others belongs to the mystery genre. It showcases the pernicious impact of materialism in life of four students, an assistant professor, and a senior associate professor. To evaluate the application value of his theorem, as his research paper has been rejected several times, he is going to practically apply the probability theory in gambling. Evincing in underground chains, he, accompanied by his students, and the assistant professor, turns to big casinos. The viewer watches the slow decay of morale, relationship, hesitation, ego, and self-esteem. As a consequence, a student commits suicide, taking no more the burden of blackmailing the professor.

Citizen Kane

Image
"Citizen Kane" is a 1941 movie by Orson Welles. It is described as one of the greatest movies ever made in Hollywood as well as World cinema. It has begun various trends, like deep focus, and thus influenced many succeeding directors. The film deals with, in a pseudo-biographical manner, the life of a newspaper-magnet Charles Foster Kane. Born in poverty in Colorado, his mother handed him over to Mr Thatcher. Therefrom his journey to be a tycoon begins. The narrative of the film goes through various perspectives of different characters. Sometimes overlapping, the people associated with Kane's life opine regarding the life of the late Kane. He was trapped in his own world of ego and his Xanadu, the pleasure-dome surrounded by statues, draperies, curtains, furniture, marbles, symbolizes that world. He dies alone in that palace. Citizen Kane was an unsolved enigma and remains so throughout the film, even after the finish, the audience fails to configure the dilemma of '...

Kaalakandi

Image
The movie "Kaalakandi" is a portrait of life perceived through the eyes of a dying man, played by Saif Ali Khan. He attends a marriage ceremony, having got informed of a stomach cancer by the doctor, and takes a drug, unlike his manners. He is presented as a good man with abstinence. Despite a restricted life style, he has got cancer and this idea turns him desperate. He commences drinking, spending time with a transgender prostitute. Besides him, the lens also focuses on three strata, where in the lower class belong two smugglers, a young couple of upper class and a marriage of higher upper class. There is a cross dialogue between the classes and an underlying hint at the operations of destiny and chance matters.

Farenheit 451

Image
Right now I just watched the film Farenheit 451, directed by Ramin Bahrani. It casts Michael Jordan in the role of Guy Montag and Michael Shannon as Captain Beatty. The film is based on Ray Bradbury's eponymous book published in 1953. It's a dystopian novel. It's a state where firemen burn books. Books are prohibited in such society and the people find words as chaotic and tiresome. The ministry spread the misconception that Benjamin Franklin founded the Fire department not to put out, but to start fire. It reminds me of another dystopian novel and film, 1984 by George Orwell. There also is a spy camera, as here is Yuxi. No privacy is maintained in this state. Those who revolt, who are fighting to keep the jewels of world literature alive, they are labelled as Eels. Only Bible, To the Lighthouse, and Moby Dick are not banned here. However, the movie is just awesome. It clarifies the need to read literature, mostly hard copies, in this digital era. Books have their own ch...

Hellboy

Image
Today I watched Hellboy. It's a 2004 drama and fantasy movie directed by Guillermo del Toro. The character of the eponymous Hellboy, played by Ron Perlmon is interesting. The film refers to the Nazi Germany, Hitler, and black magic kind of stuff. It's brilliant in its message that a man becomes a man not by origin, but by his choice. It's good.

REVIEW OF HOT FUZZ

Image
Today I just watched the movie Hot Fuzz, directed by Edgar Wright. Simon Pegg is just awesome in the role of Nicholas Angel. It's a comedy. It shows a village which had the record of no murder for 20 years only to expose all the villagers committing murders together for the 'greater good'. The scenes of men and women firing and attacking with arms are really hilarious. A chain of murders is happening for trivial reasons. When Angel finds the link of the crimes, it turns out that they were murdering for some humourous, nonsense reasons. In a way it has, thus, parodied the crime thrillers and suspense stories. I think it hints at the message that there may be some deeper motifs behind a crime that a detective can never get at. However, on the whole, it's a fun to me. It's worth-watch.
